Triathlon Career – 2006-present – I began competing in triathlons after a cycling trek across the Australian Outback. On our rest days I would find myself swimming in the local pools and people would ask if I was a triathlete. I had no clue what that was, so once I returned home I looked into the sport and I have never left. I have competed in over 40+ triathlons ranging from Sprint to Ironman from Mexico to New York. I love the thrill of pushing my body and triathlons has not disappointed me in that area yet. This season I am focused more than ever on my run as that has always been my achilles heel.

My son Blake and I have also did a 8 day bike ride in Austria and we also did a two day ride on Maui. My goal for Saint Anthony's this year to be in the best shape possible. On June 27, 2010, I did my first triathlon.  I will never forget this day as it was a day of “what the heck are you doing?” thoughts.  As we lined up around the pool that morning, I thought I was going to drown as I had no formal swim training and all these people racing in the lanes of the pools petrified me.  It was the first and last time I would ever race in a pool, as all triathlons I participate in now are open water swims.  My transitions were slow, taking my time changing my shoes and my gear; and even sending a text to my Mom letting her know how the race was going.  Although I finished 4th in my AG, I had so much fun racing and was immediately hooked on multisport. I loved the adrenaline rush, the competitive spirit and the mental & physical challenges that it presented.

In March 2011, I did San Juan70.3 and was the 8th amateur overall, placing 3rd in my Age Group.

In July 2011, I started with Phil Skiba of PhysFarm (who coaches Pros Cat Morrison & Joanna Zieger).  After 4 months of his guidance, in October 2011, I was Top 3 amateur at Miami70.3, qualifying me for my Professional License.

In 16 months, I went from being an occasional recreational jogger to a Professional triathlete.  I am very excited about the possibilities in 2012!

And that is my “multisport” story!   But stay tuned for 2012…

I've been addicted to triathlon since my very first race in spring of 2009 – the Lonestar Sprint in Galveston. Since that fateful day, I've competed in a plethora of sprint, Olympic, and Half-Iron distance triathlons, as well as my very first Ironman in 2011. I finished first in my age group in the Texas Tri Series in 2009 and2010, and hope to regain that title in the future. I love training and seeing myself progress, and the thrill of race day and the feeling after you cross the finish line cannot be beat. And of course, I heart Moxie!

Adri Kruger

Hometown: Sanger,TX
College: University of Oklahoma
Height:5'1"
Birthdate: April 21
Professional: Product Marketing Manager, National Instruments

Adri became involved in sports as soon as she could walk and has participated in activities ranging from ballet to roller hockey. Triathlons are fairly new to Adri, as she has only been competing in them for four years. She has accomplished many personal goals throughout her triathlon career, but she is most product of finishing Ironman Arizona in 2011. She attributes her successful accomplishments to the support of her friends and family.

"If I was left without my family and friends I would be nothing. I am lucky to be surrounded by such amazing people that love and support me when I am strong, and, more importantly, when I am weak."

Of the three sports in triathlon, swimming is Adri’s favorite and she gets her biggest adrenaline rush from being in the middle of a swimming pack during a big race. Her love for swimming comes mainly from her long relationship with the water. At a very young age Adri’s father taught her how to swim, but it was not by choice. The story goes something like this… When Adri was young, her family spent the majority of their summer days on a boat, so her father found it crucial that she learn how to swim rather quickly. Adri spent a few days swimming between the arms of her mother and father to become comfortable in the water, but that comfort quickly faded the day that she was thrown overboard by her father in an attempt to prove that she is indeed capable of swimming unassisted. It took just a few moments for the initial shock to wear away and Adri quickly started swimming on her own. From that day forward, whenever the opportunity presented itself, Adri was in the water. In the beginning she swam with not a care in the world… she would swim from one end of the pool to the other or dive from the diving board to touch the deep end pool floor, Over time her competitive nature started to kick in and she was no longer swimming for the sake of just swimming … it started out as and a game against herself in which she would simply try to swim across lake coves to test her endurance or beat her own time, but this evolved into competitions with others. She began challenging her dog to swimming matches in which her father would throw a toy far across the lake cove and they would race to it. This seemed like a good idea until the dog became a poor sport and left Adri with several scratch marks trying to swim over her to get the toys even after she had won, so she decided to join a swim team so that she could switch to racing humans. Adri swam competitively until College, but has always maintained a fitness routine that incorporates some kind of swimming.

Birthdate: August 20, 1984

My wife and I caught a viewing of Kona on TV in 2008 and decided that we wanted to make this our next chapter of our life. Once graduated from college we pursued the goal of doing a triathlon and never looked back.

I have struggled in the past to close a solid half marathon while racing my 70.3’s. I’ve spent the past few months and worked with a coach in order to improve and it’s been a good thing. Watch out 2012!

I have a few favorite races but would have to say that the entire experience of racing IMWC 70.3 in Vegas was an amazing experience. The vibe, energy, dedication and sheer competitiveness was extremely awesome to be around.

Goals:
Short Term:
My goal this year is to beat my previous race times at each race location and run a sub 1:30 at each race.
Long Term:
I plan to continue working with Andrea Fisher and I’m currently on a 3 year plan to go pro.

Hailing from Washington State and a former avid soccer player, Christina accidentally found triathlon after witnessing her husband, Greg, struggle through his first 70.3 and thought to herself "I can do this" (some might call this sick and twisted). Starting from humble beginnings of learning (struggling) to swim across a small condo pool and wondering why she continued to race when she so dreaded the swim, Chris went from sprint to Ironman distance in two seasons (and continued to dislike the swim). After five seasons, Chris is proud to announce she no longer gets queasy at the start of a swim. She anticipates the '12 season to be on the short side due to the birth of her son in March. She will appropriately stay away from tri gear such as spandex until she can avoid burning people's eyes in it.

I'm currently on my 7th season now in the Austin triathlon "scene". I had always wanted to do a triathlon since college back up in Canada, but had never really had the time to train for one. After finally settling in Austin after a long Southwesternly migration I tried a few sprints and was hooked. I also met my wife around that time who was training for her first marathon. After convincing her that triathlon was a superior sport :) we worked our way up to the Ironman distance in 2008. She's since surpassed me in almost every aspect of the sport and constantly keeps me on my toes. My favorite distance now is the 1/2 ironman and I hope to some day follow in the footsteps of my wife and qualify for the world championships (Vegas). In the meantime we have a little Moxie triathlete coming into the world this March so this will be a year of adjustment and just trying to keep a good base. Look forward to cheering on the crew and seeing some of "y'all" in practices this year.

John Nowell

Hometown: NA (Air Force Brat)
Resides: Cumming, Ga
Height: 5'8"
Birthdate: February 8, 1956
Birthplace: Tripoli, Libya

Triathlon Career: I started running in high school and later in my life got interested in biking after my brother in-law, Ronnie, convinced me to join his team for a MS charity ride. Running started to get a little boring, so at 50 years old I decided to try triathlon. I convinced a good friend to join me. In our naiveté, we signed up for a half Ironman in the panhandle of Florida. Due to an injury I was unable to compete in the Half-Iron, thank God, but my friend plunged ahead and after suffering greatly and becoming fast friends with the course sweepers, he finished. He still hasn’t forgiven me!

That was 2006 and I have been competing in Triathlon ever since. I have done numerous sprints and Olympic events, two half Irons and one full Iron (Arizona 2009). I am still working my way toward a top 3 finish in my age group, maybe I can achieve this in my new age group, 55-59.

Triathlon Career Highlights: My 1st triathlon I believe I achieved the longest T1 time in the history of Olympic Distance Triathlons.

Personal: Triathlon keeps me healthy and young and I hope to be competing for a long time!

Hometown: Daphne, AL
College: Georgia State University
Height: 5'10"
Birthdate: April 9

Spencer Nowell has been playing sports since he could walk and has participated in just about every team sport there is. It wasn't until a helping push from his Father in 2007 did he experience the world of triathlon. That same year, Spencer started at Georgia State University where he later established a triathlon club. This experience made him love the sport even more and has since then competed in numerous sprint, olympic, and half iron distances races. Now living in Austin, TX Spencer's goal is to become an ironman on the greatest stage there is in the sport, Ironman World Championship Kona.

"I'm so excited to have been a part of Moxie Multisport since it was just an idea and can't wait to watch it grow into the dream it is anticipated to be. There is no other atmosphere like the one this group creates and we will continue to make our presence known! Watch out 2012, Moxie Multisport is in the house!!"

I moved to Texas about 8 years ago after graduating from the University of Florida. After noticing my clothes didn’t quite fit right, I decided to train for a triathlon last year as a way to lose weight and make up for crashing out of my first one about four years earlier. I ended up completing two sprint triathlons with plans to complete the Texas Tri Series this year. I’ve been married for five years and when I’m not working or training enjoy turning on a lathe.

I've been active since I joined the Air Force in 1987 but prior to 2005 I was gym rat and 30 min of cardio was just a warm up before hitting the weight room. After moving to Austin in late 2005 I started cycling and running and after lots of duathlons I did my first triathlon in 2009. I was hooked once I finally made it out of the water and 15 months later I did my first Ironman. Since than I have continued in many other endurance races with my third Ironman coming up in August 2013. Someday I hope to race Ironman World Championships and the ultimate goal is to compete in Ultraman Canada in 2013 and my 2012 season and early 2013 will hopefully set me up to reach my goal.

I started racing triathlons in 2005 (wow, that's a long time ago!) after getting injured training for my 2nd marathon. My first race was 'The Rookie' where I wore a wetsuit for a 300M swim and couldn't bike in my aerobars cause I felt like I was going to crash. I slowly built up volume and race distance over the next few years and raced my 1st IM in 2007. Now I've completed 5 IM's and nearly 40 triathlons total. My Oly and IM PB's are 2:11 and 9:44. My goals for the next few years: qualify and race Kona, go sub 2 hours in an Oly and sub 9 hours in an IM.

  • May – IMTX

Mike Bruff

Hometown:  Darnestown, Maryland

Current:  Cedar Park, TX

College:  THE University of Maryland (Fear the Turtle)

Age/Height:  43/6’0”

Birthdate:  Nov 19

Mike started running in Florida just 11 months after being born. He learned to swim by age 4 at a community pool and didn’t learn to bike until Santa brought him a bike at age 7, complete with a banana seat and orange safety flag attached. While these three ‘skills’ were learned at an early age, none transpired into focused competition. Growing up, and through High School, Mike played all sports all year around, including Soccer, Football, Basketball, Baseball and Tennis. After college, he settled into a ‘sports life’ mainly comprised of beer, bourbon and golf, occasionally playing flag football in city and state leagues. In February 2003, he ran his first marathon. However, there would be a long pause between endurance events due to marriage, kids and other life challenges. In 2009, his older brother challenged him to race Longhorn 70.3 and so it went. After three years ‘racing’, he’s completed Ironman Florida in November 2011 and five 70.3 events and numerous Olympic and Sprint distance triathlons. Mike is married and has two daughters. And while training and racing triathlons is his passion, he still loves the ‘bourbon and golf’ tandem on occasion.

Athletic Background: I started my athletic career playing high school tennis, where I later played at the collegiate level for University of Texas at Tyler. I bought my first race-ready mountain bike in 2000, and was racing within months and was hooked! I advanced to the Pro level quickly where I raced state and national championships. After a 3 year hiatus, I eased back into mountain bike racing, this time competing in ultra distance races in Texas and Colorado. I still continue the long distance mountain biking and would like to pursue long distance trail running when I can eventually stay injury free for a full winter. I enjoy pushing my myself and discovering new limits. This year my primary focus is XTERRA racing, and preparing myself for Pro Level in the next 2 years.

Personal: I moved to Austin in 2002. I have 2 awesome Alaskan Malamutes, my girl Kaya and recently adopted boy (failed foster parent) named Neo. I recently made a career change allowing me to work remotely 100%. This allows me to train during the week more and during lunches and just love it! Michael "Irwinator" Irwin

Michael Irwin completed his first triathlon as the result of a bet after weighing in at 218lbs in early 2005. It was at that race, Dilloman, where he became hooked like so many others. Since then Michael has competed in over 30 races, from sprint to Ironman distance.

Based in Austin, Texas he was given the nickname Irwinator due to his reputation for never taking a workout off. Michael has been coached by fellow Austinite Brandon Marsh since 2009. While under Brandon's coaching, Michael has managed to shave almost 30 minutes off his 70.3 time to a personal best of 4:59 last summer in Boulder. Shortly after that race,m his season ended abruptly when a car pulled out in front of him on his last training ride preparing for IM Wisconsin. Most of the injuries were minor, except for an AC joint tear that required shoulder reconstruction surgery. Currently on the mend, Michael has been focusing on his run and bike (indoors for now) while slowly working on the swim.

The majority of Michael's support comes from his wife Stephanie whom he married in 2010. She attends every race, usually yelling "suck it up buttercup" for motivation, and ringing a cowbell to annoy fellow spectators. They recently brought home an Australian Shepherd puppy named Scout, who in a few months will be running the trails of Austin with them both.

Pete Otero

Pete completed his first Triathlon at Lake Pflugerville in 2009. For the next three years he participated in one Tri per year, and in 2012 he found Moxie. During a Pville race Pete was passed by one, then two, and then a third jersey—all with a Moxie Logo on their back. He tried hanging with the last one, but was just too strong. On Monday, he looked up Moxie online and found Coach. Since meeting coach and joining Moxie, Pete has raced his first Olympic Distance (Tri-Rock), then PR’d in his second race in Kerrville. In 2013 Pete signed up for his first half iron, and not only completed the Galveston 70.3, but beat his projected time by 20 minutes.

"Not only have I set PR’s at Tri’s, but also my running has improved and this year I ran my best race at the Livestrong Half Marathon. Working out hard and training has always been easy, but the biggest thing this year has how my diet has changed, and since joining Moxie, I have lost about 15lbs. My goals for 2013 are: Race Hard, and train hard, Work hard on my diet to see some abs, and earn my way to a podium finish. The obsession has begun, now I need to put in the work and achieve my goals. In 2014 I plan on doing my first Ironman, probably going to do Cozumel, but the destination has not yet been chosen.

Gonna stay ready, so I don’t have to get ready." – Pete

Matt Florio

Matt participated in his first tri in 2011 during the AVIA Austin Triathlon. Since then he has grown fond of the sport and the skill and endurance it takes to be successful. Having played D1 college lacrosse, Matt is used to pushing his body to its limits and working hard to get in shape but triathlon takes this to a whole new level. What he hated doing in practice, as a lacrosse player, running, is where you make your money in this game. Matt has enjoyed pushing himself in preparing for this season and is ready to take on a full schedule of races in 2013!

Inspired by an amazing single mother/co-worker triathlete and some life challenges, Del vowed to pursue a life of fitness and has never looked back. he has lost count of how many triathlons he has completed but he has done them all, from sprint to Ironman. Cycling is his favorite leg to train for, especially out in the hill country. Del has been hooked on triathlons since 2006 and on any given weekend you can find him flying (and singing) through the greenbelt (or any other) trail running – Go join him!
